Aim: This course will equip participants with the skills and knowledge to effectively respond when a person displays challenging, aggressive or violent behaviour. It will also prepare participants to disengage safely from any situation that poses a risk to themselves, a service user or others.

Certification: 1 year validation; CPI Physical Interventions are independently risk-assessed and accredited by the British Institute of Learning Disabilities (BILD).

Method of Delivery: Delivery online on Zoom

Duration: 6 hours.

Assessment: Assessed throughout the training and at the practical stage of the course. Questionnaire based on the CPI booklet.

External Group Delivery: The CPI Safety Intervention Foundation Programme is modular in design, and can be easily adapted to particular organisational requirements. It delivers a solid foundation based on the philosophy of providing the best care, welfare, safety, and security for personnel, and service users in their care.

Course Topics:

  • Identify behaviour that indicates an escalation towards aggressive and violent behaviour, and take appropriate measures to avoid, decelerate and/or de-escalate crisis situations.
  • Assess the level of risk associated with crisis behaviour, and make appropriate decisions related to the management of such risks.
  • Use suitable and acceptable physical interventions to reduce or manage risk behaviour.
  • Identify the impact of crisis events, and describe post-crisis responses which can be used for personal and organisational support and learning.
